The Health and Wellness Committee has been working hard with the St. Lawrence Health Initiative this past year on a grant for the next 5 years. Gouverneur Central Schools will be receiving $10,000 per year for implementation and working towards and environment that is creating a healthier school and community. The CHSC School Coordinator, Sarah Bentley-Garfinkel, has helped put this program and grant into effect here at Gouverneur. Below are the items that have been purchased in the 2015-2016 school year.
The climbing wall, weight machine, and leisure recreation items were received from the Health Initiative’s Creating Healthy Schools and Communities Project, which is funded by the New York State Department of Health.

The climbing wall is an excellent resource that will be used in many different settings such as during physical education class, after school clubs and elementary classes. The climbing wall will be integrated into our elementary PE curriculum climbing unit that will focus on scaling both high and low elements. It will coordinate well with the cargo nets and climbing ropes that we already have. The after school clubs and elementary classes may use the climbing wall to increase fitness levels, muscular strength, balance and coordination among many other physical fitness skills that are gained by this valuable piece of equipment. The climbing wall is a piece of equipment the will be used in many different ways throughout the Gouverneur Central School District.

Physical education teachers, coaches, students and staff will all be able to use this resource to increase their physical activity each and every week. The Precor FTS Glide machine is a great fitness machine that children and adults can gain physical benefits from without having a spotter help. This allows you to exercise at maximum levels with the proper resistance needed in order to perform the movement. So not only is it a safe machine for students and adults to use, but the machine can be used to exercise many different muscle groups. So it is a very dynamic machine the can be used in a variety of ways to increase muscle strength and overall fitness. The Precor FTS will be a great addition to the fitness center and an excellent station that will be added to our fitness curriculum.

The indoor recess and other physical activity opportunities are primarily going to be used at the elementary grade levels. Classroom teachers will use these resources to implement activity breaks throughout the school day. Studies have shown that increase levels of physical activity allow children to comprehend classroom information better. So by having these indoor resource and other physical activity opportunities available, it will allow our students to gain the physical activity they need throughout the school day in order to function in the classroom setting. PE classes will also use these resources throughout their units to increase student understanding, opportunities for adventure and student satisfaction. PE units that will gain benefits from added resources into the curriculum will be units such as outdoor adventure games, cooperative games, fitness stations, balancing, hand-eye coordination, obstacle course, etc.
